"Technical glue" is the best way to describe links in websites.  After designing the non-profit sites, I can totally understand that.  One could see the slide towards computers "thinking like people" watching the quick advancement of computers from the early 80s to now.  I think it's a big job that these people took on, taking on all the chaos of the then new technology of the 80s and classifying and mapping it.
